Why Yahoo! never made it too far

Disclaimer: I am not a programmer. I did a bit of programming in college and I “dabble” occasionally. I by no means consider myself hard core but the following might assume I think I am.

We all know the hype of IE9 right? It’s the latest and greatest out of the halls of Redmond. They’re suggesting for all of us to upgrade and try it out and see for ourselves it’s the best thing since sliced bread. OK, I took the plunge, I upgraded just like many others will – in order to try it out as well as try to be ahead of the IT curve, in such a case I get asked any questions.

Today, I took my browser to Yahoo! Answers because Bing told me it would have the answer to the question I was looking for. I got there and Yahoo! told me IE9 wasn’t a new enough browser and I should upgrade:

What’s even more comedical is when I click on the Upgrade Now link, in lieu of taking me anywhere it takes me to a page that says:

Yep, that’s right. IE8 isn’t available for my system. So, three learning experiences we need to teach Yahoo! in order to get them up to speed:

1. When testing for browser compatibility your programmers might want to use $browser >= $version and not just hard code specific versions

2. P.S. I’m running Windows 7 which runs IE 8 fine although you don’t seem to think so

3. IE8 is not ONLY available for XP, Vista and Server 2008. It comes bundled with Windows 7 which makes it available for that OS too (see number 2 above).

Seasons Greetings (with font problems!)

Sometimes people make my job blogging so easy (p.s. thanks!) :)   As you do during the holiday season, you send and receive cards.  If you’re special enough to get cards from vendors or clients, you look at them to see if they’re signed or if they’re printed and then you put them festively on your desk or hang them up.  Well, I got a beauty the other day.  Same bloke that worked for EasyJet, then left and went to WH Smith…Guess what, he makes Christmas Cards now..Check it out:

SeasonÕs Greetings From The team

Rather than name and shame the people, just enjoy the ho ho – ut oh – that was made when the printers put these cards to press…Oh, and when I was in high school, my English teacher would have liked me to point out, From shouldn’t be capitalised, nor should The (well you might capitalise it), but Team should definitely be…

EasyJet looking for IT Staff too!

Last week, I reported to you that BAA (Gatwick if we’re being specific) are looking for IT staff. Good news is, if you don’t want to work for BAA (they’ve sold Gatwick anyways), there’s always other IT positions.  It seems low cost budget airline EasyJet – “Come on, Let’s Fly” – must not make enough from ticket sales to pay for quality IT staff.  OK you ask, what is it they’ve done?  Well, EasyJet has offices in the UK (Luton unfortunately of all places) and also in Switzerland.  What’s that got to do with the price of fish?  Well, they put their T’s & C’s in both English and French on the ticket back.

Good news is if you live in England you still utilise the pound as your currency and EasyJet take this in to consideration when they write out our T’s & C’s.  Let’s have a look (if you click the image you’ll see what I mean):

DSCF0607 (1024x768)

Essentially if anything happens you’re allowed £3,500 or EUR 5,100.  At today’s exchange rate, I’d rather the Euro’s please (5100 EUR = 4572 GBP).  No worries…now here’s where they are looking for IT staff, if you’re in the market.  French version goes like this:

DSCF0605 (1024x768)

Again, if you click on the image, it gets bigger.  UT OH!  Houston, we picked a font that doesn’t display the Euro symbol.  What the text means to say is “5,100€ ou 3,500 £”, but what it actually says is “5,100_ ou 3,500 £”.  First of all, should we tell them we put the £ before the monetary value, nah.  However, the bigger faux pau is the fact that in their own language they’ve botched up their own symbol and when printed it comes out 5,100_.  By the way, don’t they change the comma for a full stop in French?  Shouldn’t it actually be 5.100€

Come on, let’s fly!
