Recycling

recyclebin

We all see this little guy on our desktop every day (even if you’re using a Mac you see him too!). He’s the recycling bin.  Today I thought, whilst not 100% technology related, I’d talk about recycling with a little story…

The weather was nice where I am today and it prompted loads of people to go out and do their recycling.  I live on a little island that is less than 30 square miles wide and over the past few years we’ve all mucked in with regards to our recycling – so much so that on the first count we’ve been told we’re recycling over 35% of the island’s waste.  That’s awesome when you think about it.

So, what does this have to do with technology and why do I tie it in to the little guy that lives on our desktops (ok so you can tweak the registry to hide him)…because in reality IT is one of the most environmentally unfriendly things the "green team" are targeting lately.  Data Centres and the IT industry actually create more carbon emissions than the airline industry!

As technology gets better and more efficient, sure we’re making progress, but today when I saw everyone doing their recycling (we don’t get it collected like most parts of the world does – we have to take it to the bring banks ourselves) it made me feel just that little bit better to know that I was helping the environment – essentially right clicking and emptying my recycle bin and not shift deleting and throwing it directly away :)

Server 2008R2 Forest Level – Recycling!

recycle bin

Everyone’s favourite little saviour, the Recycle Bin.  Well, good news, it’s now in Windows Server 2008R2.  It’s already been there you say?  No, I don’t mean if you accidentally delete a file, I mean if you accidentally delete things in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). Yep, that’s right.

RECYCLING AD OBJECTS!!

It’s a new forest level "Windows Server 2008R2" which introduces the option to CYA on accidental delete.  Next thing we’ll be asking for is for it to be mapped to Control-Z :)
