Windows 7 Themes – Guernsey One

NOTE: This is the first in a series of Guernsey themes.

Everyone likes to personalise their background.  With Windows 7, this capability has been extended even further.  Windows 7 introduces “Themes”.  What a Theme lets you do is combine one or more backgrounds with your favourite sounds, colours, screen saver and any other personalisation settings.

With the kind help of the Guernsey Press Company Limited, I’ve been given some exclusive photos of the great Channel Island of Guernsey.  Their photographers take images all around the island and they’ve given me over 60 of their best which they feel showcases their island.  You can read more about the Guernsey Press’ stories (and see where they get the photos) from their website.

What I’ve done with the photos is create a Guernsey Theme for Windows 7 which I’d (and they’d) like to share with you.  This is Guernsey One:

The images are depicted by a URN (Unique Reference Number) and should you wish, you can use that URN to get a physical copy of the image (using the URN) here.

To install the theme (which rotates all of the above images, download it by clicking on the button below (it’s 38 MB). Once downloaded, simply double click the file and enjoy :)

Windows 7 Themes – more more more

uk-theme Introduced in to Windows 7 was the concept of themes – multiple backgrounds, a sound scheme, power management settings, the whole monty all “zipped” up for a better lack of terms.  For those of you who tested Windows 7 there were limited themes available, but now it is at GA, as part of the launch, they’re offering loads more themes…more countries, more backgrounds and even sponsored themes – like Coca Cola, Ducati, and Ferrari.

Check out more and download some of the new themes over at the Windows Personalisation Site:

Windows 7 Regional Themes

If you haven’t already found the "Personalize" part of Windows 7 (right click on the desktop and it should be the last item), you’re missing some fun stuff.  Windows 7 introduces Themes (I wrote a while back on "Themes, Themes, and London" which was a Theme pack), but at any rate, what I was getting to is that there is a theme installed per your Regional Settings.  For me, as I live in the UK, there is a United Kingdom Theme activated for me by default.  However, buried in the windows directory structure lives a few other themes, even though they might not be my regional locale.

Navigate to:

C:\Windows\Globalization\mct\

(it’s a hidden directory so you’re best to copy and paste it in to the run dialogue)

themes-directory

and inside that folder is five subfolders (currently – maybe it will change in the RC?) MCT-AU (Australia), MCT-CA (Canada), MCT-GB (United Kingdom), MCT-US (United States) and MCT-ZA (South Africa).  Inside each of these folders is a theme folder wherein there is a theme file.  Simply click that theme file and presto you’ll have that regions theme installed, configured and ready to use (activated) on your machine.

Enjoy!

Themes, Themes, and London

For those of you that like London, or maybe those of you (like me) who live in or are from the UK and are using Windows 7, the default theme for us isn’t all that bad.  Good news is with a little rummaging for pictures here and there, you can make your own theme and here’s just one of those:

London Theme Pack

Included in the theme pack are photos of:

  • Big Ben
  • Tower Bridge
  • The Thames
  • London Eye
  • Tate Gallery

Simply download the 10MB file above (stored kindly on my Windows SkyDrive) and double click on it.  Presto you’ll have a London theme up and running in no time.
